Certified Medical Transcriptionist Training And Career Options

Medical Transcription training is offered at online schools such as Allied Health Schools. To become a Certified Medical Transcriptionist you must take program courses from an accredited college or university either online or at a campus. Before you take any certified medical transcriptionist course online or offline make sure the school you choose is accredited and can offer you the proper curriculum for your state. The laws concerning certification vary from state to state but most do not require certification to work in this career. You will need a high school diploma or GED before you can take the courses to become a Certified Medical Transcriptionist. Depending on what level you want to take this career, it will take 6 months to 2 years to complete. This ranges from a diploma, certificate program or an associate’s degree program. If you choose this as a career you should know that there are many jobs available in this field in venues like hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing facilities, clinics and other healthcare facilities that require medical transcription work for their records.

The credentials of a CMT are for those who have been employed for at least 2 years and have transcribed acute care (highest level) medical dictation. The CMT exam is provided and administered by the AHDI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity).  The AHDI also offers an exam for RMT (Registered Medical Transcriptionist) for those that have not worked at least 2 years in the field. Taking the exam for RMT lets your potential employer know that you have advanced skills and are serious about your career. Gaining employment in the MT field may require certification by your potential employer so it is best to take the certification exam when you can.

The special equipment needed to perform this job varies a bit as today’s technology has offered better more efficient ways to transcribe audio recordings. Back in the 60s the equipment included a manual typewriter and a tape recorder with headphones. Today, the use of advanced software programs, digital transcribers, foot pedals, headsets and an audio player that can play various types of formats has provided the Certified Medical Transcriptionist more convenient ways to transcribe medical audio recordings by doctors or other health professionals into text formats.

Certified Medical Transcriptionist careers are high in demand and provide a good income with a starting salary of around $25,000 to $35,000 depending on your state. You will be required to take a medical transcription test prior to employment whether you are working in an office or at home. This is one of those careers that allow you to work from home once you have the required experience.
